The Georgia Department of Public Health conducted a survey to examine opioid-related practices in
emergency departments (EDs) across the state. The questions were developed based on evidence-based
guidelines for the use of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), safe opioid prescribing and
education, screening and evaluation of overdose patients, utilization of medication-assisted treatment
(MAT), and warm handoff activities in the ED setting. The survey found that drug poisoning survivors
who consented to treatment were provided a “warm handoff” 69% of the time (n=37/54).
